History

1993

A provincial Steering Committee came together to plan and implement a coordinated community approach to inform and educate the public about family violence problems and solutions.

The committee was made up of a variety of community organizations and government departments. Members agreed to work together to motivate grassroots public awareness of family violence initiatives around the province.

The initiative was funded by Health Canada, with in-kind support from the Government of New Brunswick and resource assistance from the YWCA

In keeping with the underlying principle of promoting and supporting community-driven initiatives, the Government of New Brunswick relinquished the co-chairs position and administrative duties in 1996.

1997

Committee took on the name Provincial Caring Partnerships Committee

Government of the New Brunswick continued to support the project with a three year funding arrangement. Other contributions came from sources such as the NB Advisory on the Status of Women, the Muriel McQueen Fergusson Foundation and the Solicitor General of Canada along with in-kind contribution of committee members.

Committee keeps the co-chair model. Muriel McQueen Fergusson Foundation (MMFF), a provincial charity with the mandate to eradicate family violence through action research and public education, agrees to act as co-chair and administration of committee. Efforts are continuing to maintain existing communities and encourage new communities to join the network.

Role of the Committee

A Provincial Committee of community and government representatives oversees this province-wide initiative. The Committee provides support, resource assistance, and co-ordination. It also fosters networking opportunities, sharing of best practices and public awareness and advocacy on family violence issues generally.
